Fire Hydrant Testing

Fire hydrants are used for taking water from the water supply for fire extinguishing and suppression. Hydrants are located in a vertical position in special wells in accordance with GOST 5525-61. The height of the fire hydrant will depend on the depth of the well and may vary from 500 to 3000 mm. There are two types of hydrants - surface and underground. Underground hydrants are installed in a way that allows the well to be easily closed. Hydrants are manufactured according to the GOST. In addition, every hydrant must have a fire safety certificate.

How are fire hydrants tested?

All fire hydrants must be checked twice per year. The testing includes:

  • availability of water in the pit, and in the body of hydrant;
  • working condition of the lid, water well and hydrant housing;
  • check how tightly are valves fitted;
  • check how easily they open and close;
  • check the bandwidth of the hydrant.

Responsibility for repair of fire hydrants falls on the organization that oversees the work of water supply and sewerage.

Fire Hydrant Testing

What is checked first when testing fire hydrants? First step is to check whether hydrant is opening and closing correctly. Sequence of necessary actions is described in detail in the fire standards. It is a requirement for the fire hydrant valves to be very tight when opening and closing.

Responsible organizations should promptly carry out the cleaning of hydrant wells. Free access to the hydrant should also be provided at any time. In case of pavement repairs hydrant lids should be cleaned from the asphalt.

The most common faults include:

  • freezing of water at low temperatures;
  • water runoff into the well;
  • blockage of the drain;
  • corrosion;
  • leakages due to irregularities in the installation gasket.

Checking fire hydrant on the water loss

To determine the consumption of water from the supply, fire hydrants are checked on water loss. Such tests are conducted when hydrants are located:

  • far away from the pumping stations;
  • have small diameter piping;
  • in buildings with high fire danger;
  • if there is inadequate pressure in the water supply network.

When testing for water loss each network segment needs to be agreed with the water organizations and service providers.

There are several ways to determine water loss. The first way is to measure volume - the water flow is calculated by measuring tank. The second way - using stem-water meter (the fire barrel, equipped with a pressure gauge). The third method uses a large diameter water meters. The last method is  using fire column.

After the tests are completed, an inspection report and test reports are prepared. All breakages and malfunctioning units are recorded in the report. A person responsible for repairs must then be assigned. Repair timeframes and terms are also included in the report.

The examination and testing of fire hydrants is very important, because faulty hydrant will not save lives in the event of fire. Qualified and certified professionals must conduct such inspections.

Our company offers comprehensive fire hydrant inspection service. Working fire hydrant can quickly eliminate the source of fire. Regular inspections and maintenance will provide you with peace of mind and keep your employees safe. Our engineers can perform all necessary repair works as identified during the testin
